Course duration and schedule
The course lasts 10 hours, divided into 2-hour classes.
It will be conducted via a virtual platform such as Zoom or Teams.
The schedule is as follows:
4:00 P.M. Madrid (GMT+1).
The classes will be recorded and uploaded to the Geotecform virtual platform for viewing for 15 days after the course.
Course content
This 10-hour course on tailings dams it´s backed by over 50 years of experience from the lecturer, who was involved in nearly 30 dams. The lecturer also analysed the Samarco and Vale disasters and will discuss measures to avoid such problems.
Who should attend?
The course is tailored to engineers, geologists, and undergraduate and research students dealing with tailings. Tailings managers should also benefit from the technical content and discussions.
Learning objectives
The course will cover:
- Introduction to water and tailings dam types and construction methods and associated risks
- Site investigation (boreholes and sampling, SPT, CPTU, SCPTU, VST, geophysics and lab testing)
- Theoretical background: laboratory tests, critical state, dilatancy, liquefaction
- Some challenging mining projects
- Samarco’s Fundão dam failure
- Vale’s Brumadinho disaster
- NorSand constitutive model
- FE analysis of four large tailings dams in Brazil
- Methodology test on Brumadinho Dam
- Instrumentation (piezometers, inclinometers, tiltmeters, automation, remote sensing, vibration and dynamic monitoring)
- Dam inspection experience
- Tailings management
- Tailings dam closure
Certificate
Students who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion issued by Geotecform Modelización. These diplomas, which include a secure QR code verifying the document’s authenticity, will be sent digitally via email.
